Colonial one concept by onthesquare Colonial one concept by onthesquare
This is the original concept sketch I did for the Colonial One, president Laura's ship. It originally was spec'd to be a 1200 passenger spaceliner. Of course it was later learned that this particular ship was also supposed to land in Galactica's hangar bay. The model being almost built, Lee Stringer and the folks at zoic ended up having to make the ship's windows much smaller to change the scale to allow for this.

Looks like a smaller version of an (EVE ONLINE) Amarrian Armageddon-class battleship... with a lot less refinement for the engines.

This was done back in 2003 I think...for the Battlestar Galactica reboot on SYFY (which if I remember correctly no longer exists!)

I would have to admit, that I preferred the older BattleStar Galactica over the current one, mostly for the reason that the story was more compelling and open, a fair bit realistic on how we would probably actually act in several hundred years. The 1980's continuation is non-canon and doesn't count either... I hated it with a passion... But I disliked the reboot even more...

You're not alone. When I was doing shows (megacon etc.) i talked to  hordes of folks and about 50 percent of them loved the reboot and the other half hated it. There wasn't any middle ground!
I was 15 or so when the original Galactica was on tv and I ate it up. My fave episode is "Fire in space" I thought it was very well done! When I was asked to participate on the reboot i went out and bought the set of all the episodes from the first show and I have to say though, I found out that about half of them were almost unwatchable. (After not having seen them since the '70's) (How things change as we grow older!) Of the reboot though, I only found perhaps three episodes that I really didn't care for, and I have to put that down to the writing being a lot more mature...or me just getting too old! :)

I first watched the original back in the later 90's, early 2000's, especially during the summertimes when I was about 12-15. I LOVED it. I mean... I rolled my eyes at some of the stupid crap, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The first two episodes were pretty decent, a little gory for their time too, but still good. It had catchy characters you could LIKE, and hardly ever hate. And you had a POSITIVE knowledge of who the damn badguys were. I could barely watch the Blood and Chrome first episode, even though I was given a digital copy of it for free...

It was meant to be funny and stupid. Then again... you can see it in this day and age with new shows popping up and copying it, just for the hell of it. They would rather reference the old stuff than the new stuff. Which by the way, if used properly, the old cylons would be more effective than the new ones, being that the man-filled costumes that they were, had more mass and ability, not to mention they could talk effectively. If I were to pit the old versus the new, the old would win. More skills and variations. There was also CLASS in the old. OPENING EPISODE of the new series, the one cylon-human woman kills a baby in a carriage... that is just... not classy at all... nor realistic... why would a cyborg cylon spy waste energy in killing a CHILD. Classless shit I say!

Unique and creative look. I have no idea why a spacecraft would have a nose like that, but it looks very "ship-like".
I might take a stab at making a Spore spacecraft inspired by this.
